Phonics

At St George's we teach phonics using the Ruth Miskin Phonics scheme, Read, Write Inc. (RWI)

Read Write Inc. is a complete Literacy program, for 4 to 7 year-olds, learning to read and write.

Reception

The children are taught;

  • Set 1 sounds as a whole class.
  •  Oral blending, segmenting and blending of green words.
  •  Tricky red words. (words you can't use your sounds for.

  In term 2 and 3 children are split into groups and are reading different phonics books which suits their individual needs.

Children will be taught;

  • Set 1 recap of sounds.
  • Set 2 sounds.

 Year 1

The children are taught;

  • RWI sessions for 30 minutes a day.
  • Children are set into ability groups.
  • Set 2 and set 3 sounds.
  • Reading books, comprehension skills, suited to the children's ability.
  • Teaching of tricky red words. spelling, writing sentences and writing for different purposes.

All children in Reception and Key Stage 1 are taught the skills to read and through the consistent teaching of phonics, children develop their confidence to read and spell green and red words.  (please see below as an attachment) At the end of Year 1, government guidance requires pupils to complete a National Phonics Screening test.

All children in Reception and Year 1 are assessed every 8 weeks to ensure each child is in the correct phonics group to suit their need and make progress in reading.

Our aim is that by the end of the Autumn term in Year 2, children will have achieved the requirements of the RWI scheme. However, we still continue any additional interventions or phonics sessions if any pupils need extra support. Children then progress developing their fluency and comprehension skills through use of the grey books in RWI, where they look at spelling patterns and grammar. This enables our children to make a smooth transition from simply reading words to understanding a piece of text.
